Campers on a Mission was organized in the early 70’s. COM is a national non-denominational fellowship of Christian campers who share their faith while camping and serving God on various projects. COM has a national chapter and many state and regional chapters. A national rally is held in June of each year. Most active states have a spring and fall rally. The Indiana COM was founded in 1980. Charlie and Nellie Mitchell met with the Indiana State Resort Missions Director, B.T. Scrivner who helped plan their organizational meeting in July of 1980. This meeting was held in Brown County State Park.
Our first rally was held in October of 1980 at the Lincoln State Park. The Indiana COM currently holds their spring and fall rallies at Highland Lakes Baptist Camp near Monrovia Indiana. You do not have to attend the whole time. If you can only come for a day or two, that is great. If you can only come for the rally that is OK too. Some of our group can no longer work or pull campers, so they stay in rooms at the Mission Lodge here at Highland Lakes. Oh, by the way, our stay is free. Our campground has full hookups, shower house and a camp kitchen. We don’t just work. We also have great fellowship. We pray every morning before starting our work day. We have a devotion time after lunch each day. We have a cook out/carry in one night. There is never a lack of food or fellowship. Sunday, we have a worship service or visit a local church. We may go into town for a supper meal or ice cream too.
